In search of immortality

Defying death is a subject that has, over centuries, continued to fascinate man -who has perennially been in search of its own elusive elixir of immortality- that will not only do away with the botheration of dying, but also pause the process of ageing. In short, it would enable humans to reach the utopian stage known as chir yuva or eternal youth. As actor Woody Allen once exclaimed, 'I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I'd rather achieve it through not dying.' Sentiments which, no doubt, everyone would agree with. The big question, however is- whether it is possible to achieve immortality- realistically?

The following article takes a look at these questions and comes to the conclusion that in a democracy, morality and ethics can only be inculcated, not dictated.

The Leaves of destiny

Imagine that you meet a person, for the first time in your life and he starts telling you accurately- details like your name, your parents’ names and your profession - and then also proceeds to tell you your future. All this, from an ancient palm leaf written years ago, even before you were born. These palm leaves, collectively known as Naadi shastras are the foundation for a unique form of predictive science- known as Naadi astrology, the origins of which date back at least thousands of years.

Missing...but does anyone care?

Every year, in our country, thousands of children go missing. What happens to them is anybody’s guess. A few manage to get united with their families. However, many end up without being traced. For a parent, a child missing is perhaps worse than death, since death at least has finality and does not leave you hanging. For the police however, missing children come low in their priority, especially if they belong to the lower strata of society.
